6 Steps To A Beautiful Lawn

As your lawn care partner, we want your lawn to be the healthiest, most attractive lawn it can be. You can be assured NATURESCAPE will give your lawn the proper fertilizer throughout the year. We will control annual weedy grasses such as crabgrass. We will control broadleaf weeds. We will monitor and control damaging insect and disease problems, and we will provide professional consultation for your lawn or landscape. The following six practices are steps that you can take to further enhance the beauty of your lawn making it the best it can be.

1. Maintain l” to 2” of water per week throughout growing season either from natural rainfall or watering. When watering, water heavily and do it in the morning.

2. Mow lawn regularly, maintaining a height between 2 1/2" and 3 1/2''. Avoid taking more than 1/3 of grass blade at one mowing. Lawn clippings return needed nutrients to the soil, therefore avoid removing after every mowing. Use a well sharpened blade.

3. Have lawn aerated once a year. Aerate twice a year if your lawn has a heavy thatch layer or the soil is heavy clay. This is the most beneficial practice because it promotes root growthessential for a healthy lawn.

4. Control weedy perennial grasses such as coarse fescue and bentgrass by using roundup or by digging them out. Following the first 3 steps will do much to squeeze them out. If you have any questions about these grasses please consult with your lawn specialist.

5. Minimize damage from shade by thinning trees and shrubs and removing lower branches. Seed with 5 lbs./1000 sq. ft. of red fescue. Try to avoid traffic and in the fall, keep leaves raked.

6. Please consult your lawn specialist if you see any changes in your lawn or you have any concerns with your lawn or landscape.

1st APPLICATION

Welcome to the NATURESCAPE Lawn Program.

This is the first of five regularly scheduled lawn applications which comprise the yearly NATURESCAPE Lawn Care Program. Today you received either:

1) Seasonal balanced fertilizer or

2) Seasonal balanced fertilizer, pre-emergent crabgrass control and broadleaf weed control.

Your invoice indicates which products were applied. If you did not receive pre-emergent crabgrass control or broadleaf weed control, they will be applied in the next application (late April) which is excellent timing for these products.

The first component, a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen as a key ingredient, is specially formulated to stimulate recovery from winter. The fertilizer also includes phosphorus and potassium for sustaining strong, healthy turfgrass during the coming months.

The second component is a pre-emergent crabgrass control. A chemical barrier surrounds the crabgrass seed and neutralizes it. It is applied now because, to be effective, treatment must occur before germination of the weed.

The third component is a broadleaf weed control. This will control emerging broadleaf weeds.

Customer Follow-Up

Please observe the following guidelines if you received broadleaf weed control today. (Your invoice indicates if this was applied.)

1. Please keep children and pets off lawn until the application has dried.

2. Please do not water heavily for 24 hours. (This is a safety margin and does not necessarily mean a light or even a heavy rain within this period will affect the application.)

3. Please do not mow for 24 hours. Return clippings to the lawn for the first two mowings following this application.

4. It will take some time for the established weeds to die. If you do not see results within 14 days, please call us to return for further service.

Coarse Fescue VS. Crabgrass

One of the most common concerns we hear at this time of the year are regarding crabgrass. Often, what is mistaken for crabgrass is actually coarse fescue. There isn't any selective control for coarse fescue because it is a perennial grass just like the rest of the grasses in the lawn. Fortunately, after the first few mowings it blends in with the lawn and homeowners usually can't even find it.

COARSE FESCUE - PERENNIAL, VISIBLE THROUGHOUT YEAR:
UPRIGHT/CLUMPY TREATMENT: NO SELECTIVE CONTROL

VS.

CRABGRASS -ANNUAL, VISIBLE JUNE - SEPTEMBER:
STRUCTURE: GROUND HUGGING/SPREADING
TREATMENT: PRE-EMERGENT WITH THIS APPL.

2nd APPLICATION

The second of five annual treatments is made to promote healthy growth and to prepare your lawn for the rigors of summer.

One of the important components of this application is fertilization. Fertilizers provide the nutrients that are necessary to sustain plant growth. The application contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash as well as micronutrients including iron, sulfur, magnesium and zinc. These micronutrients will help your lawn maintain the lush green color you desire.

Also, included in this application is a broadleaf weed control if you did not receive it during Application 1 or if your lawn needed it again. Various broadleaf weeds such as dandelion, plantains, clover, and others will be brought substantially under control by a very effective weed control material.

3rd APPLICATION

The third of five annual treatments is designed to help keep your lawn strong through the summer.

The major component of this summer application is fertilization. We have used a controlled release fertilizer that will provide your lawn with regular nourishment during the summer. This also reduces stress on the lawn during dry, hot weather.

Broadleaf weeds are spot treated as necessary and insects are also treated if found.

Customer Follow-Up

The summer months can be very stressful for your lawn. To keep it healthy, proper maintenance practices are important now more than at any other time of the year.

Proper mowing is very important. University agronomists recommend a 21/2" to 3" cutting height for most turf grasses during the hottest part of the summer. If your grass plants are mowed too short, they are less tolerant of summer stresses. Your lawn will become more susceptible to damage from heat, drought, diseases, insects, weed invasion and wear from traffic. Also, remember the 1/3 rule: Do not cut off more than 1/3 of the height of the grass leaves in any one mowing.

Watering should be done on a regular once a week schedule if there has not been sufficient rainfall. It should be done with a single HEAVY watering for each area of your lawn. The soil should be wet to a depth of 4 to 8 inches from irrigation. This is usually between 1" and 2" of water.

When not provided with sufficient water, grass plants will wilt. Wilting plants become darker in color and if severe drought occurs, they go dormant. When dormant, leaves turn brown and the plants appear dead. Learn to use the darker color as a clue that your lawn is under drought stress particularly at mid day when it is the hottest. Do not mow your lawn and try to minimize traffic if the plants are wilted.

Customer Feedback

Naturescape is continually trying to make its service the best it can be. In order to accomplish this, we appreciate your feedback on our services.

We know you have busy schedules but we would sincerely appreciate your returning the enclosed card answering the 3 questions. We will make random selections and offer free lawn aeration this fall to the chosen customers. Thank you for your help.

4th APPLICATION

This application is the fourth of five regularly scheduled carefully formulated applications to your lawn.

A prime objective of this application is to promote recuperative growth and color. The nitrogen fertilizer is applied at this time of the year because somewhat cooler temperatures, especially at night, afford an excellent environment for growing turfgrass.

Along with the fertilization, a broadleaf weed control treatment is included if necessary and insects are also treated if found. Weed control is applied at this time to provide a continuing hold over those pesky weeds which may have germinated since the last weed control application. When soil, moisture and temperature conditions are just right, out pops a new generation of weeds.

Fall Lawn Care

With cooler weather, there are certain things to keep in mind when caring for your lawn. Here are some reminders.

Mowing

As the temperatures cool and rainfall becomes more abundant the cutting height of your mower can be lowered. Excessive height traps tree leaves and leads to matting of the grass, both of which can be injurious to grass plants. It will also be very important to mow more frequently as the turf will be growing more vigorously in the fall. Remember to avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time. Also, make sure your mower blade is sharp. Continue mowing as long as shoot growth is evident.

Leaves

Remove all tree leaves from your lawn on a regular basis during the fall. Regular raking of leaves is good for your lawn, and it will help you avoid messy, wet leaves which can accumulate. Tree leaves not only smother grass, but also cut off light which is required for photosynthesis and late season root growth. Leaf-smothered areas will show damage in the spring.

Aeration

Enclosed is information about aeration. This is the very best thing you can do for your lawn this fall. It will both help decrease thatch and it will promote root growth. The root system is actively growing at this time of year. A healthy root system is the foundation of a beautiful lawn. We offer this service at super prices.

5th APPLICATION

This final application of the year is a specially formulated fertilizer that will provide nutrients to stimulate root growth and to store carbohydrates in the roots of the grass.

This gives the turfgrass extra strength to survive the winter and provides for an early spring green-up while minimizing excessive shoot growth and disease problems.

The importance of strengthening the root system of turfgrasses cannot be overemphasized. The grass roots are hidden from view and often not given the consideration they deserve. Roots function to anchor the plants in the soil and, of course, to absorb water and nutrients.

This time of the year is a period of active root growth and by fertilizing now we will strengthen plants that may be recovering from pest injury or damage from environmental stresses.

Customer Follow-Up

Today's application was a granular application so you can mow your lawn or rake the leaves immediately after this application without having any affect on the results.

MOWING: As the temperatures cool and rainfall becomes more abundant the cutting height of your mower can be lowered. It will also be very important to mow more frequently as the turf will be growing more vigorously in the fall. Remember to avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade at one time. Also, make sure your mower blade is sharp. Continue mowing as long as shoot growth is evident.

LEAVES: Remove all tree leaves from your lawn on a regular basis during the fall. Regular raking of leaves is good for your lawn, and it will help you avoid messy wet leaves which can accumulate. Tree leaves not only smother grass, but also cut off light which is required for photosynthesis and late season root growth. Leaf smothered areas will show damage in the spring.
